LDP breakthrough; libertarians elected to local authorities
The local authority elections in New South Wales has provided the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) with its first elected representatives in Australia. We have had local councilors in the party before now, but this is the first time they have been elected under the LDP banner.
Jeff Pettet has been elected to Ku-Ring-Gai council with a 24% primary vote, at his first attempt at elected office since leaving the old moribund Liberal Party and joining the party of liberty and fresh ideas. His wife, Angie got 14% in an adjacent ward but it was not enough to get her over the line, although still a respectable effort.
The big and unexpected news was that Clinton Mead has (subject to preferences) been elected to Campbelltown council. Clinton is a member of the LDP Federal Executive and should provide some much needed talent to the council’s deliberations.
Other results were mixed but we are off to a promising start. Peter Whelan, the National President pulled a respectable tally in his attempt at becoming Mayor of Hornsby. This has been a nice dry run for him in preparation for the federal election, in which we expect him to lead us into government.
This is fantastic news! Well done to the LDP.
